Dramatic night light gives an eerie look to the Roman Arena in Nimes, France. Built around 70 AD, when Gaul, as France was called, was an important trading area of the Roman Empire. After the fall of Rome, it was, like many other structures, put to other uses, including as a military fortification and even a walled neighborhood with several hundred residents. Today it is used for concerts and bullfights.
Like many other cities of southern France, Nimes is rich in Roman remnants, including an intact temple (the Maison Carree) that houses a “documentary” history of Nimes. Other important Roman sites can be found in Arles, Orange, Vaison-la-Romaine and more.
