Here’s the Brooklyn Museum, in a night view that has the dramatic lighting of a linen-era postcard. The museum is a world-class collection that doesn’t get noticed as much as it should because it lives in the shadow of Manhattan’s Metropolitan Museum and Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney and the Guggenheim and more. Many people only seriously visit museums when they’re traveling—perhaps because they don’t have a treasure like this only blocks from home.
In addition to hosting a steady stream of big exhibitions, the Museum has a core collection that includes the Luce Center for American Art which narrates the growth of the country and its art in parallel with history and social change; one of the world’s great collections of ancient Egyptian works, significant European masters, African art and more. And, it’s restaurant space has just been taken over by Michelin-starred restaurant Saul.
The museum is located at the head of the renowned Brooklyn Botanic Garden, almost next door to the Central building of the Brooklyn Public Library, and just down the block from Olmsted and Vaux’s masterpiece Prospect Park. Easy to get to by bus or subway (there’s a station under the entrance) and even by hop-on hop-off tourist buses.
