Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, Dec 6, 2013: Taj Mahal – India’s architectual jewel

Just completely breathtaking and so beautiful. No matter how many times you may be lucky enough to see this beautiful white domed mausoleum, it is just one of the finest and most beautiful masterpieces in the world’s heritage that you will ever see. When viewed early in the morning, just before the crowds start to assemble and with the early pink light of dawn, it is just spectacular and so magnificent. I felt in awe and honoured to be here, in this space, in front of such beauty.

Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in loving memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Maha, who died giving birth to their 14th child, it’s construction was started around 1632 and completed around 1653 having employed thousands of the finest artisans and craftsmen in it’s building. The white marble tomb is the central focus of the entire complex and the marble dome above the tomb is 35 meters high (115 ft).

The 40 meter (130 ft) high minarets at each of the 4 edges of the tomb were constructed to lean slightly out of vertical, away from the tomb, so that in the event of a collapse, they would fall away from the tomb.

Just to be there in front of such a fantastic scene is a “lifetime’s event”. I love India, it’s history, vibrant life, majestic architecture and endless stories!!!

Emperor Shah Jahan himself described the Taj in these words:

Should guilty seek asylum here, Like one pardoned, he becomes free from sin.

Should a sinner make his way to this mansion, All his past sins are to be washed away. The sight of this mansion creates sorrowing sighs;

And the sun and the moon shed tears from their eyes.

In this world this edifice has been made;

To display thereby the creator’s glory.

Sounds like he was a great man in his time !

January 15, 2016: Stonehenge Summer Solstice

The sign of times soon to come! This was my first summer solstice sunrise at Stonehenge in England and I love the picture because it heralds the warm sunny days that are yet to come (please!) after the dark days of winter. The solstice sun-rises are the only occasions these days when the public are allowed to be within touching distance of the old stones that comprise ‘the Henge’.
