This week’s second puzzle, the puzzle set for the TravelGumbo detective squad has a detective story of its own. These buildings are on Apotekesgatan, part of the medieval core of Ystad, Sweden, the Baltic port that is home to Henning Mankell’s police investigator Kurt Wallander.
We swung by there on our trip to Scandinavia to take a walking tour of sights and scenes from the popular books (filmed in English with Kenneth Branagh; locals claim he’s not as good as the actors in the Swedish series).
Ystad is an important ferry port on the “Swedish Riviera” with passenger ferries to Swedish beaches and islands and to Poland, and freight ferries to other ports as well. It’s also a popular summer beach spot. The town dates to the 11th century and is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Sweden, and boasts a number of excellent examples of Brick Gothic churches and monasteries. See slideshow below.

Wouldn’t you know, the mystery within the mystery. And while I’m at it, WE WANT MORE WALLANDER!! In English or otherwise. I kind of liked the original version. Scandinavians do depressed so well.
