We need some help. Our son does some geocaching with his American pals. This summer, he and several of his college friends are going to Europe, going different directions. They are planning several meet ups in European cities. They think it would be fun to use their mobiles and do geocaching in different towns. Is this a good idea ? Do Europeans know about this game ? Will people get upset when the kids are snooping, looking for the geocache ? We do not want him to get into trouble. Advice, please.

Hello TatToo,
I live in Europe especially Germany. I do know Geocaching and of course the game is known here. If you don’t have a GPS device with a European card in it you can use your mobile phone as long you have the geocaching app. Before your son goes to Europe just with that mobile phone, make sure he looks for geocaches in areas he will be first and download the map and the cache itself. Even if you don’t have an Internet connection they can use it via GPS. I did it in USA and it has worked great. He can download more when he has wifi access in a hotel for example.
We don’t feel us disturbed if kids looking for caches. The opposite is the case. Adults doesn’t look at kids that much when they are playing. The best cache finders are kids and dog owners
I just can say let them do it!!
Sincerely Janine
Your welcome. I wish them a lot of fun. Of course dogs don’t find geocaches but they are a good excuse to look on things in or on the ground
Is there a main website that the geocache folks have set up? You could also ask over on Craig’s list http://www.craigslist.com in the “community” section of where ever you want, or even where the kids are traveling to….. I would do some research, but Europeans are into travel alot, maybe they have done it more than the Americans ever had since they have been around longer? I hope this helps…..
RU thinking that we should ask in the Craigslist Community section for each town where they want to geocache ? Do the kids use that Craigslist section a lot ? That is an interesting idea. Thanks for that. Like your selfie avatar
guten abend, Janine – That is reassuring. Thanks so much ! He had also been wondering about how to use his mobile in Europe. No problem downloading some apps – too many ! – while in the uS.
I think his buddies said that they have GPS on their devices. So the dogs are really good at finding the geocaches ? Our dog only finds old shoes and icky trash. I was in Germany in my college days and loved it. They say a lot has changed. The food and the beer is probably better than ever, though. Thanks a million Euros for the help !
