The island of Murano in the Venetian Lagoon has been known for hundreds of years as a source of fine blown and molded glass, although sadly much of what is sold in souvenir shops in Venice and elsewhere is cheap imported imitations.
Murano glass is known especially for extraordinary use of color and finely-shaped forms, but as the image above shows…glassmakers also like to have fun. These images were shot during a brief stop on Murano; a number of outdoor sculptures are featured in small squares. All three of these works are nothing but glass, even the stems!
It’s also possible to visit some of the foundries—I wish we had! Next time…
Not glass…just beautiful lettering.
