Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, Jan. 30 2014: Skyline Arch, Utah

One of my favorite places to visit in the United States is Arches National Park, near Moab in Utah.  The park features rugged and colorful desert scenery and highlights more than 2000 arches, of which Skyline Arch is just one.

Skyline Arch is a popular stop for many visitors to Arches National Park.  It’s an easy hike to the arch and with a challenging scramble you can get directly under it — a good opportunity to experience an arch up close.  The arch is situated in a beautiful area of the park in a landscape that is slowly but constantly changing.  For example, in 1940 a large chunk of rock fell from this arch instantly doubling the size of its opening!

After the story about the arch opening doubling in size, I’m not sure I’d be too comfortable experiencing it “up close”.  Very beautiful, though, from a these distances.

Good thing you weren’t standing under there in 1940!
