Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, Feb. 25, 2014: Wat Pho, Bangkok, Thailand

Wat Pho is the Temple of the Reclining Buddha statue in Bangkok, adjoining the Grand Palace in Phra Nakhon district.  This statue generally is thought to represent the dying Buddha, about to attain Nirvana.  The Wat Pho statue is truly massive measuring 43 m in length and 15 m tall and is in a very narrow chamber so it’s difficult to get a photo to give you a sense of the scale of it.  But in the surrounding Temple complex there are an additional 1000 Buddha images, two rows of which you see highlighted here.  The Temple grounds are lovely with great architectural features.

Wat Pho and the Grand Palace complex can be explored in one day and are a highlight of any visit to Bangkok.

I was surprised to see that Buddhist bibles are placed in the bedside draw. Just like a Gideon’s bible.

Really is an amazing read !

Full of proverbs like :

“A man who commits adultery likes licking jam off a sharp knife !”
