Gumbo’s taking a trip to the past this time. This picture is a bit over half a century old, but the scene hasn’t changed much…except, of course, that now it’s in color.
But where is it, and what’s at the end of the line?

So exactly where is Gumbo today?
I think there’s a few built on the same idea of traction.
And a few claims for the Longest/ Highest/ Oldest.
I have one in mind – I think you took the earlier photo when you were resident in another country. Near a famous Battle !!
Its a Funicular Railway – but there are so many in Europe and America !
Garry…it’s fairly hard to think of someplace in Europe that’s NOT near a famous battle…even some that took place in wars no longer famous.
So, yes, the picture is from my teen years living in Europe, and a battle took place in the area, but a LOT longer ago than my time there…
This one is in Europe, and claims to be one of the longest.
When its first section was built, it was powered by water-filled counterweights; later by a combination of cog-and-cable and for the past 50 years by cable only.
Am I giving away too much? Maybe…
