March 25, 2014: Two days ago I pondered a scary possibility, thinking I’d lost a great many of my photographs. Yesterday, still on the hunt, I came upon the receipt for my digital camera, bought in 2007. Checking travel dates, I then knew not much was missing after all, maybe one card, everything else was on film. That I could cope with.
It made me realize, though, that I need to take more pictures, even when I’m not in exotic places. So I bought a fresh card for my trusty Canon Elph and today I walked around outside my house, taking pictures of springtime emerging in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Then I got in the car and drove 2 miles to town and took pictures there. Those will become the first installment of several about the region in which I live. I’m not as aware of my own neighborhood as I might be, not unusual I suspect. I’ve spent time here throughout my life, with family in the neighborhood, but while I’m still pretty new here as a resident I should take advantage of the fresh eyes, and also more familiarity than a weekend visitor might have, and tell you what I know to be true. Northern California is among the most beautiful of places and also historically significant. The discovery of gold in these hills changed America. But I’ll save that for another time and, today, please enjoy a few images of spring from my neck of the woods.

I got these just in time. It’s been raining every day since, not that I’m complaining, we need it badly. But waiting for a day now when I can do more for “Gold Country”.
It’s good to see the California drought may be coming to an end.
Even in the UK – where we get more than our fair share of rain- we get droughts.
The 9 month drought of ’76 gave us ground levels sinking and causing damage to buildings. Now the ground levels are sinking in California.
The worst drought you’ve had since 1894.
Thanks for the vivid colors, and the hope they give me that spring will soon reach us in the Frozen East as well (actually, I see the signs of revival already in the branches of my climbing rose).
As well, the lone brown leaf in the last picture reminds us that this is only one phase in an endless cycle.
Beautiful pix Port Moresby. Sometimes being a traveler around your own back yard can be just as much fun as being in another country.
