We have been staying in Taormina for about a week taking various day trips using the GPS. Well, we have certainly driven on some unusual roads, paths, dirt alleys, and assorted passageways of four wheeled transport. We ultimately end up at our intended destination, usually, but what is it thinking?
Returning to Taormina each evening begins our craziness again, especially on the twisting, curving roadways. Once we are back we now disconnect the device and find our way back to the b&b.
Tomorrow we fly back to Roma for a few days and then back to “Da Burgh” and work For the summer school session.
Life is good.

I have mixed feelings about GPS. Sometimes they’re a good send. Other times they make for hazardous driving. As a rule, I still prefer old fashioned maps. Call me old fashioned…..

My wife and I refer to the GPS as Sybil, a nickname we gave after one we used in Chicago kept taking us into dead-ends and up wrong-way streets until we became skilled at interpreting her prophecies…as Heraclitus described an ancient Sybil:
The Sibyl, with frenzied mouth uttering things not to be laughed at, unadorned and unperfumed, yet reaches to a thousand years with her voice by aid of the god.

It is funny how I love using the GPS in some places, but not others.

Since I downloaded the US Maps to my UK TomTom I’ve had great fun !

GPS opens up a whole new world to the Tourist !
Just returned from a month in Greece. I don’t know what I would have done without GPS, given that streets are not always marked, and when they are, it can be difficult to see the signs (posted on buildings, not on the street corner) or they can be only in Greek. On the other hand, it’s hardly foolproof! Sometimes hard to tell who was the bigger fool, me or the GPS!
Exploring is great fun – getting lost is a pain.

Sometimes getting lost is the beginning of the fun…but it’s nice to know the way back!
I did meet a lot of great people asking for directions over the years ,although I must admit I love the GPS in places like Washington DC where its so easy to get confused even with directions
