Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, June 24, 2014: Beijing Olympic Park

In 2008, Beijing hosted the Summer Olympic Games.  The spotlight was focused on the country.  The whole nation showed tremendous enthusiasm and put on great efforts for the event which was the first for the country.   The event was successful and memorable.  The venue  and its interesting and unique architectures became a tourist attraction even to this day.

The Beijing National Stadium, or “Bird’s Nest”, is the unique and beautiful centerpiece of this complex.   It was where the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field events and soccer finals of the 2008 Games were held.  The stadium has room for more than  80,000 spectators.

The Beijing National Aquatics Center, or “Water Cube”, hosted swimming, diving and synchronized swimming events.  It had a capacity of 17,000 (reduced to 6,000 after the Olympics) and is located next to the National Stadium.

DrY, I see you’ve taken several young members of the Canadian Olympic team to Beijing.  Their athletic potential is apparent!
