This week Gumbo traveled to Bomarzo Italy to luxuriate among the fantastic monstrosities bought to reality by one man’s grief.
The early 1550’s were a tough time for Prince Orsini of Lazio Italy. He had been held captive for ransom for several years, fought in a war, lost his best friend, and when he arrived back home his wife died. What is a Renaissance Prince to do? Bomarzo sits in the Lazio section of Italy, about 100km north of Rome, near the city of Viterbo. This is an area that many Italians go to for vacations, but Americans and other Europeans have not yet really discovered.
The Park of Monsters is an ornate Italian garden that is filled with gigantic statues that from the depths of someone’s nightmares.

I really enjoyed visiting the whole area around Viterbo. It is a really laid back place. Not like Rome, Florence or other high traffic places in Italy
