On a trip to the Mayan Riviera, I went to a park called Xel Ha to do some snorkelling and sightseeing. I was captivated by these Macaws, their bright colours are such a contrast to their surroundings. I am fascinated by them and the way that they can almost seem human when you look into their eyes. They breed them and then release them into the wild and I was lucky enough to be present for a release. They were so loud, all squawking and screeching as 25 of them were being set free in a burst of colour. It was magnificent to watch them fill the sky and embrace their freedom.
What amazingly beautiful birds! As wonderful as they are in person, nothing prepared me for seeing large flocks of them in flight. The oscillating color patterns of the flocks in the air are something I’ll never forget.
