Sitting square and massive 400 feet (122 m) above the surrounding countryside is the mighty Mehrangarh Fort . Situated above Jodphur city the fort is enclosed by imposing thick walls topped with cannon. Inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their particularly intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. A winding road leads to and from the city below from where richly decorated elephants carry awestruck tourists up to visit the fort.
At every turn during the visit to the fort you will come across fascinating sights. I particularly liked this period lock on one of the great gates which instantly brought visions of attacking armies beating on the gate and held back by this mighty piece of ironwork.
The imprints of cannonball hits by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate of the fort. The museum in the Mehrangarh fort is one of the most well-stocked museums in Rajasthan. In one section of the fort museum there is a selection of old royal palanquins, including the elaborate domed gilt Mahadol palanquin which was won in a battle from the Governor of Gujarat in 1730.
You can always get me with close details of texture and craftsmanship…but the idea of arriving by elephant adds a plus!
