It seems like an odd point in the year to remember winter caution, but winter comes earlier some places than others. This reminder is on a series of stairs that go up and down an area of Sulphur Mountain, near Banff, Alberta. They connect the upper terminal of an aerial tramway with restaurants, gift shops etc. But they also connect to the old stairs that go up to the weather station at the summit (below).
Desert View Watchtower, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
A visit to the Desert View Watchtower on the eastern portion of the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. Constructed in the 1930s, it offers magnificent canyon views and a tie to the Native American history of the Canyon.
Too bad you were there too early to walk to that hilltop. It’s actually a Cosmic Ray monitoring station, long since closed, now a National Historic site in Canada. Here’s a link that tells you a little more about it.
The views from up there are much better than from the Gondola terminus, good as those are.
