Photo Gallery: Basel’s Daily Market

DSC02454On our recent stopover in Basel, we visited the daily market that’s taken place in front of the city’s Rathaus, or town hall, for centuries. Unlike the weekly markets that are everywhere, this one is there every day, and bigger on weekends.

The Rathaus itself is nearly 600 years old, and while I couldn’t find the earliest date of the market, it may have been about then.

No, this isn’t part of the market…it’s a bronze memorial to where the market once took place, in the cloister of the cathedral, a short walk from today’s market.

Of course, we didn’t just look at the market and take pictures. We loaded up on (possibly too much) fruit and vegetables and cheese for our flight the next day, and with sausages and brown bread as well for a picnic lunch at the market.

I won’t even try to describe it all: I think the pictures tell the story. We’re constant market-goers, but we were impressed with the quality of the produce, especially some wonderful small Bella Mira plums…barely larger than big cherries.

Yes, there is a place to eat it all, right at the market!
