The sun was settling on the horizon after our first evening game drive in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. It had been a great evening, with hundreds of animals spotted (and photographed)! Our guide knew exactly where to take us to enjoy the sunset. “The hippo pool”, he said. And he was right! We arrived just in time to enjoy the fading sunlight reflected of the pool’s tranquil surface. Sunsets in Botswana are magical!
Bobbing in the water were several hippos who were very aware of our presence and carefully watched us. Every now and they let out their “bell-laughing” grunts, one of the most memorable sounds I carried with me from that trip. If you want to know what that sounds like, there’s an audio clip of it at this link.
