Many of Gumbo’s mystery haunts have been places of beauty, sublime or otherwise; some have had the stamp of antiquity upon them, and some of nature. All by way of telling you that this one is different. Gritty, lived-in, beaten-about…and yet to some not only a thing of beauty but a treasure of history. But enough! Gumbo knows where he is…do you?
Join your fellow Gumbo Guessers in picking out the telling detail, the deceptive decoy, whatever…perhaps you will come up with the answer…perhaps not!
And if you are one of those few who will know it at a glance, SHHHH! Give others a chance to seem incredibly perceptive, or to flail about! No reveal before Thursday; any e-mail guesses will be published Wednesday evening, right or wrong…
THE RULES
- Share your suggestions, hints and discussions with others by posting them here as comments…
- If you absolutely know where it is….please give others a couple of days to work on it before you pounce. If the answer is burning your fingers, e-mail it to [email protected] and we’ll publish it Friday night…right or wrong!
- To post here, you need to be a member…but that’s free and easy. Just click HERE
So, exactly where is Gumbo today? Please be as specific as possible.
Alright, to start off I see what look like kegs stacked to the left of the tracks which could make this a bar or pub, depending on the country.
The building looks built too low on the tracks for this to be a significant active line. Also the tracks have lots of weeds on them. So I favor an abandoned line somewhere.
When I first saw this I thought China or SE Asia. But the kegs are a good spot.
There’s grafitti too. Eastern Europe?
I don’t think those things are kegs. If you look at the enlarged picture they seem to be attached to the building with space between, rather than stacked.
Puzzler’s Hint: They are, in fact, wooden barrels…but it won’t do you much good to know that! Keep on guessing, folks!
I’m working on the area to the left. A beer garden? A sad one, where one can ‘cry in their beer.’ Arbors with possible tables. Also there’s a green recycling bin on the right – so building is in use? That narrows it down, right?
Found Onea and Asp graffiti but can’t tell where they tag. Onea on a French website. My French is not good enough to decipher if Onea tags there or they’re just reporting. Asp graffiti reported on a site for taggers – and too hip for me.
RISOT (above the window to the left) also comes up in Paris
I found http://www.loupiote.com/photos/4202235131.shtml It looks very similar
Paul we’ve had a lot of great WITW is TravelGumbo’s already and this is my favorite to date for a lot of reasons. Amazed at peoples clues! Although I think I know the answer ,I could easily be surprised. Although I agree with the above clues and think it’s in France the graffiti sure looks like California doesn’t it?
Jonathan L’s e-mail to [email protected] yesterday correctly identified the scene as being along the Petite Ceinture, a former commuter and freight rail line circling Paris.
Last chance for added glory: Can anyone identify the specific station?
There are a lot of similarities between this station and Atlanta’s Brookwood Amtrak Station at 1688 Peachtree St NW, as viewed from the south, including tracks too close together, narrow platforms, long steep stairs, iron fence, the pitch of the roof (which at one time was red spanish clay tile), the brackets supporting the roof, the windows overlooking the track, the weeds, the general condition, the congested neighborhood, and of course the lack of parking.
I have to give some credit to Lynn Miller who pointed towards the graffiti and France.
