The Sri Harimandir Sahib, more famously known as the Golden Temple, is situated in Amritsar in the state of Punjab in India. It is the central religious place of worship for Sikhism and therefore the most important Gurdwara (holy shrine) for Sikhs around the world.
The majestic gold plated edifice shines brightly in the golden sun as thousands visit daily to seek solace, pilgrimage or simply admire the grand ornate architecture of this holy shrine that was built in the 16th century.
It was built with a unique Sikh architecture. The Gurdwara is surrounded by a large lake which consists of Amrit ( translated to mean “holy water” or “immortal nectar”). It has four entrances from all four directions which signify the importance of acceptance and openness and that people from all walks of life are equally welcomed. The Gurdwara is also built at a level lower than the surrounding land level. It is said that this teaches the lesson of humility. The gold plating on the holy shrine was started by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, a major donor to the Gurdwara, and was completed in 1830.
Today it is the most recognised landmark in Punjab, India and continues to be a symbol of peace, prosperity and equality for every creed and race.
What an amazing place! Thanks for sharing it.
