Is the revolution coming? New York’s plan for upgraded LGA and JFK

Long-awaited big change is planned for New York’s over-crowded airports. NY Gov. Cuomo and Vice President Biden held a new conference today to announce sweeping plans that are so far without a specific plan, a completion date or total costs…but hey, you gotta start somewhere!

Actually, a design competition for the complex projects will begin in about 30 days. The plans, with federal and state participation (through the Port Authority of NY and NJ, which operates the area airports) includes

  • Major cargo facilities at Stewart Airport up the Hudson at Newburgh to relieve cargo congestion at JFK and allow more space for passenger operations
  • Tax-free industrial zones at Stewart and at Republic Field on Long Island
  • High-speed rail and ferry service from Laguardia to midtown Manhattan
