Australia is well known for its country and outback towns. The region of Gippsland is located in the south-eastern part of the state of Victoria. It covers an area of around 16,000 sq.miles (41,000 sq.klm) and is an economic, rural area with farming, mining, power generation and several tourist destinations.
We have explored this region over several journeys and visited many of the towns along the way. The small town of Thorpdale lies in the Latrobe Valley, in the heart of potato country, and has a population of around 500. The buildings date back to the 1930’s and one of my favourites is the Traveller’s Rest Hotel. It’s what you might call your average Australian country pub, built of red brick and in a slightly art-deco style. Nothing fancy or elaborate, just a local “watering hole”.
What I like about it is its “time has stood still” look and just the plain and simple facade. You can get a cheap bistro meal here from Thursday to Saturday, not to mention “the best cold beer in the valley”. Cheers!
