Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, December 19, 2014: Postcards from Morocco – the hand of Fatima

An old door knocker, spotted in Marrakech, in the shape of The hand of Fatima. Believed by Muslims and Jews alike to protect its owner and those in the house from the evil eye. Muslims believe that the five fingers of the hand represent the five pillars of Islam and Jews believe them to represent the five books of the Torah.

In Islam the hand of Fatima, is named to commemorate Muhammad’s daughter Fatima Zahra (c. 605 or 615[3] – 633). Levantine Christians call it the hand of Mary, for the Virgin Mary. Jews refer to it as the hand of Miriam in remembrance of the biblical Miriam, sister of Moses and Aaron.
