My first solo trip was to Madrid and Toledo in Spain. I had been travelling for years, but always in a group. This time I was on my own, and a little petrified. I shouldn’t have been as Madrid is easy to get around and the locals are always happy to help.
Madrid is a beautiful city, and discovering the numerous areas the capital had to offer was easy. I bought the Madrid Card before jetting off, and the card was ready to pick up at the airport on arrival. The card gained me access to several museums as well as discounts at a number of restaurants and bars.
I was also able to use the transport system for free, and take the train to Toledo, a former capital city and only a 30 minute train ride from Madrid. Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the highlight of my trip. A city on a hill surrounded by the Tagus river. Cosy small streets wind around the centre and main sights, such as the Castillo de San Servando, the Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, all beautiful reminders of its medieval history.
