Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, February 27, 2015: Postcards from Morocco – the camel train at sunset

As the dying rays of the sun bathe the fine red sand of the huge windblown dunes of Erg Chebbi behind the little town of Merzouga on the edge of the Sahara, the camel rider and his charges are silhouetted on the skyline. Listening to the call to prayer echoing out from the nearby mosque minaret he is surely doing exactly what his ancestors have done every day for the past hundreds of years.

The solstice sun-rises are the only occasions these days when the public are allowed to be within touching distance of the old stones that comprise ‘the Henge’.
