Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, March 8, 2015: Bernkastel-Keus, Germany

Bernkastel-Keus is a beautiful small town situated on the banks of the Moselle in Germany. The town has a traditional marketplace with timber-frame houses and flowers decorating the facades. The district is known for its wine (mainly Riesling wine), and you can see the vineyards on the hills around Bernkastel-Keus.

I visited the area with my family a few years ago. We took the car from Belgium to Germany, which was a very good decision. There is plenty to see around Bernkastel-Keus and the easiest way to explore is by car.

One of the more interesting places to visit are the ruins of Castle Landshut. Perched on top of a hill, surrounded by vineyards, it gives you superb views over the area.

A boat trip on the Moselle is a must-do activity. I loved the trip, as we passed several villages along the river and saw the beautiful vineyards on both sides of the valley.

There are many cities close to Bernkastel-Keus which are worth a visit such as Traben-Trarbach, Trier, Cochem and Koblenz.

I remember this area from trips with my family from Heidelberg, where we lived for a while…and I learned to love the area’s wines!

Beautiful part of Germany. Following the Moselle or the River Rhine you’ll see fairytale castles and villages.

Taking a cruise down either river is a must see.
