Tunis attack spurs both cancellations and support

In the wake of the terrorist attack at the Bardo Museum in Tunisia, in which 20 tourists were killed, two trends have emerged.

MSC Cruises (most of the victims were passengers on the MSC Splendida) and Costa (a division of Carnival) have indefinitely re-routed cruises that were schedule for port calls in Tunisia, substituting other ports.

At the same time, a social media campaign has spread in Britain and elsewhere, pledging to visit Tunisia and support its important tourist industry in defiance of the terrorists. British tour operators, through their organization AITO, say they have had few cancellations, but that this is not the big season; the real effects may be felt later. Derek Moore, AITO chair, suggested that those planning to visit are safer if they are traveling with experienced tour directors rather than on their own.
