Heading west along the Jurassic coast road from Weymouth, Dorset, the road rises steeply up the hill which rises above the Tropical Gardens at Abbotsbury. Stopping for a moment to look back, there is a breathtaking view that encompasses much of Lyme Bay and looking to the far horizon we see the semi-isle of Portland. This magnificent view is just a small part of the 95 mile long, 185 million year old, World-Heritage Jurassic coast.
From this lofty position we see the strong dark line of the amazing natural pebble beach – Chesil Beach – that draws a perfect parallel line with the land. Inshore of Chesil beach is a band of calm water called The Fleet. Almost overlooked on the hill below our viewpoint is the lovely little 14th century St. Catherine’s Chapel.
