Skopje: Macedonia’s surprising rebuilt capital

Macedonia, a former Yugoslav republic, and original home of Alexander the Great, has just invested a lot of money—many think too much—in rebuilding its capital city of Skopje, and trademarking its ancient hero, which it thinks Greece has stolen.

The project, called Skopje 2014, is almost complete, and has two main aims: Draw tourists, and reclaim history, or at least the Macedonian version of it. The project has put up huge neo-classical government and civic buildings, and installed hundreds of statues, ranging from 22-metre statues of Alexander the Great and his father, Philip of Macedon to smaller statues of various national heroes to pure kitsch: statues of everyday residents and tourists!
