Crowded planes a safety hazard? Witnesses say so…

Flight attendants, at a Federal hearing, pointed to “legroom wars” and increased air rage. A safety expert pointed out that the FAA’s evacuation tests use planes with more legroom than you’re likely to get, and Charlie Leocha of Consumer Traveler pointed out that while there are space-and-food rules for dogs, there are none for humans.

All this from a hearing held by the Department of Transportation’s Advisory Committee for Aviation Consumer Protection, which reports to Congress. Leocha is a member of the panel; he pointed out that in the last 10 years, average seat pitch has shrunk from 35″ to 31, with many planes as low as 28″.  The evacuation tests are done with 31″ pitch.
