We know Gumbo is a fan of civilization, enjoying art, architecture, fine food and cultural experiences. But Gumbo also deeply loves the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it.
This week’s puzzle finds us away from large cities and in a fairly remote place, though with a village nearby. While going for a walk, Gumbo discovers this cute creature hiding under the branches of a bush. This week’s puzzle is a two parter. 1) What is the animal Gumbo is looking at? and 2) Where in the World is Gumbo?

So, exactly what is Gumbo looking at, and where is Gumbo today? Please be as specific as possible.
I was going to say it looks like a Wallaby, but as for the place it is still too big a an area to pin down.
Awfully chubby version of what I though it might be.
Is it a nutria?
Hmm … I wonder … I might have an advantage on this one
Some good insights so far, but it’s too early for specific comments.
Another visual clue. A slightly different view of the animal in question. It’s awfully cute, isn’t it?
Not Sumatra, or a rat, but some people have confused them for rats.
Jill, you seem to have a pretty good sense of what and where this is. Email us the answer: [email protected]
Looking at the plants and the fur…we can eliminate the tropics, right?
Not the tropics,correct PHeymont.
And time for today’s clue. To give a size perspective, the animal featured is about the size of a small cat.
It looks like a certain sort of marsupial to me …
Arrgh! The Giant Rat of Sumatra! Sherlock Holmes fans, you’ll know why I’m running!
Hi Jack. No, it’s not a nutria. But Jill was right in identifying it as a marsupial. Question is, what type?
Time for today’s clue. This time centered on the land area in question.
Here are a few views of what this place looks like. The bodies of water in the center of both photos are salty lagoons.
Time for another clue.
The place is an island off an island….
Tomorrow is the last day to solve the puzzle. The “reveal” goes up Monday morning.
I’ll consider answering one or two specific questions if anyone has any before then….
