JetBlue will fly scheduled direct service from NYC JFK to Havana each Friday, starting July 3rd. Like all U.S. flights to Cuba it will operate as a charter with one of the officially approved travel service companies, in this case Cuba Travel Services. The flights are open to those who fit one of the 12 categories of approved travelers.
The announcement came from New York-based JetBlue in a joint announcement with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who recently returned from a trade-promotion visit to Cuba. New York metro area is home to the U.S. second-largest concentration of Cubans.
Reservations for the flight are made through Cuba Travel Services; the airlines are not yet licensed to sell tickets to the public. JetBlue also operates four Havana flights a week from Florida cities, and says that “Cuba will one day play an important role in JetBlue’s overall Caribbean network, a region where JetBlue is the largest airline.”
