Remember Travels with Charley? Move over, John Steinbeck. Here’s another story of a man on a mission, traveling America’s roads with his dog—and this time it’s by motorcycle.
The journey began several years ago, when Ara Gureghian’s son died of cancer. Some time later, Gureghian adopted a rescue dog named Spirit. Eventually, Gureghian, who calls himself a “Gypsy at heart” decided to take to the road for what he though of as a healing journey. Just himself on a motorcycle, with Spirit in the sidecar, and a cargo trailer behind.
They’ve been on the road for over 300,000 miles now, much of it in the West and Southwest, including many days in National Parks. Spirit has cycle gear of his own, including helmet and goggles. Along the way, Gureghian started documenting the journey in a blog called Oasis of My Soul. He’s also self-published a photo-book of 9 years on the road and a second book, Freedom on Both Ends of the Leash. Both are available on his website.
