This month marks the 80th anniversary of what is surely the world’s most elaborate subway system, and one of the largest. Moscow is celebrating with a parade of trains, from the newest to historic reconstructions, making special trips on the lines.
Moscow’s subway, whose first sections opened in the 1930s, was a tremendous source of pride for the then-socialist Soviet Union, and the stations were all very individual and very ornate, with art in many styles…not only socialist realism!
Current construction will make the system, by 2020, the fourth largest in the world, after Seoul, Shanghai and Beijing. Details of the celebration from Moscow Times HERE, and a huge gallery of historic and current photos from the Guardian (UK) HERE.
