Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, May 21, 2015: The Summer Palace, Beijing China

The Summer Palace was the Emperor’s retreat for over two hundred years. It also became the prison of one emperor. The Empress Dowager Cixi imprisoned her son here when he tried to institue reforms in 1898. Above is a detail from The Long Corridor. The Palace sits on Kuming Lake, with two temples overlooking the lake – one on Longevity Hill and one on Yu Quan Hill.

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
