Free WiFi starts on Japan’s ‘bullet trains’

With demands for free and fast WiFi as the norm spreading all over, it’s no surprise that it’s been spreading in Japan, too. But up to now, on the railroads, not so much. That’s changing!

Since May 1st, free WiFi has been available on the ‘shinkansen’ (bullet train) line connecting Tokyo with Aomori Prefecture and will be added to more trains soon. Japan Railways is also adding it to JR East’s Yamanote line that circles downtown Tokyo and to 11 other Tokyo stations.

Users sign on with an e-mail address and get 3 hours access. There’s no limit on how many times a day they can do that; if you can stay awake that long, it could be 24 hours!
