Pompeii frescoes, stolen in 1957, return to Italy

Three frescoes, missing from Pompeii since 1957 have turned up in the U.S., and been returned to Italy. They are part of a larger trove; a number of other pieces have already been recovered.

These three apparently spent the past almost-60 years in the private collection of a wealthy U.S. citizen; after his death recently, his collection was put up for sale, and the Pompeii pieces were recognized. Italian police and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement worked together to recover them.

The announcement was made last Tuesday by Culture Minister Dario Franceschini and U.S. Ambassador John R. Phillips.
