Thales’ mock-up of what the system might look like.
Just like Santa Claus, your seatback screen may soon “know when you are sleeping, and know when you’re awake,” according to Japanese inflight entertainment maker Thales.
At the just-ended Paris Air Show, Thales has been showing off its new concept, applying technology originally developed for handicapped people and now available on some smartphones—using an iris scan to know when you are looking away or asleep, and pausing the entertainment until you’re watching again.
Company spokespeople suggest it may be a few years—but not many—before airlines can offer it to you. In the meantime, they’re also offering another innovation, apps that allow your phone, tablet or other device to communicate with the inflight system. That could, for instance, allow you to continue surfing the internet on your device while watching a movie on theirs, or to pre-select and download entertainment choices.
