Yet another new feature at the Smithsonian in Washington: a demonstration kitchen at the National Museum of American history, and a series of food-and-innovation themed activities to show it off.

Among the opening activities is a series of Food Friday events at which visitors can watch a 45-minute cooking demonstration with a professional chef, with the opportunity for conversation with the chef and culinary exhibits. Each of the Friday programs will be matched with a dish based on the recipe in the museum’s cafe.

July’s Food Friday programs will all be organized around the theme of “Summertime in America,” and will include a southern barbecue on July 3, grilled chicken and vegetables on July 10, seafood on the 17th and more. Among the sponsors and providers are such names as Le Creuset, Kitchen Aid, Sur La Table and independent chefs.

Later months will feature themes such as Harvest in America, Native American Heritage, 20th century Food Movements and more. There will also be a Food History Weekend Oct. 22-24. For more information on the food programs, click HERE.
