Copenhagen: ‘Best Bike City’ gets even better

Copenhagen, which beat out Amsterdam earlier this year for the title of best city in the world for cyclists, is upping its game with several new commuter bridges just for bikes.

The city already has hundreds of miles of bike lanes that are grade-separated from both the cars and pedestrians, but heading into the crowded center of the city, cyclists must share bridges carrying heavy car and tram traffic.

Later this summer, the city will open the first of several new bike-only bridges near the existing bridges. The first one crosses the Inner Harbor between Nyhavn and Christianshavn. The next, whose design has just been chosen in a competition, will parallel an existing bridge, and is expected to be complete in 3 years. It will not only relieve congestion on the existing bridge, it will re-route bicycle approaches to a less-busy road. The bridge can swing open to allow boat traffic.
