If you’re flying out of Rome, you may not be

A fire last May that heavily damaged Terminal 3 at Rome’s Fiumicino airport is leaving passengers stranded or with major changes. The terminal handles most international flights, and it is mostly international flights that are affected.

In one of the worst examples, a British Airways flight last Wednesday from Rome to London Gatwick was shifted to Naples on short notice. Many passengers were unaware, and those who were had scant time to make the 225km trip to Naples; the plane left half full. Passengers quoted in TheLocal.it reported that BA offered no help with the cost or the logistics of getting to Naples. BA has apologized, but also indicated short-notice shifts may continue, as the airport’s situation changed.

Easyjet has also been affected, but operates many of its flights from an alternate Rome airport at Ciampino. Easyjet has promised its passengers 48 hours notice of any changes and offered overnight accommodation if needed.
