It’s a girl! Hamburg’s zoo celebrates baby elephant

Hamburg’s Hagenbeck Zoo has a new member this week, with the birth of a yet-to-be-named baby after a 23-month pregnancy. The  mother is Yashoda, who has had one other calf.

Zoo officials haven’t announced the baby’s weight and other measurements because she appears healthy enough not to need immediate help from a vet. She’s being left to the care of her extended family of 9 other elephants, who step in and help her when she seems to lose her footing.

The Hagenbeck zoo, which is privately owned, is one of the world’s oldest and a popular visitor attraction. The zoo is using hamburg.de to gather name suggestions from the public, and the public will be able to vote on names.
