New York’s JFK airport is expanding its services, including a spa and massages, and pools. Sadly, for those of you who like being pampered, this special treatment will be only available to traveling pets.
JFK’s new $48 million “Ark Terminal” will open in 2016 and will be used for shipping and caring of animals in a first class way. Dogs will be free to explore a 20,000-square-foot area that includes massages, a dip in a bone-shaped pool, and “pawdicures”. Cats can lounge in a “jungle” made containing climbing trees (wonder how they get them down if they don’t want to??)
Also available is a “pet hotel” (boarding) service for dogs whose owners are traveling without them, for a mere $100-per-night (not sure what boarding costs are elsewhere in NYC but I’d consider this pretty high). The Ark will also have customized spaces for horses, cows, and other animals. For example, horses will have pens with soft flooring, easy on the hooves.
“It will be a place for people who love their pets like they love their kids,” Cliff Bollmann, an architect on the project. “Maybe more.”
JFK is not alone in developing special facilities for shipping animals. Frankfurt’s airport also offers first class amenities.
