Cincinnati, which used to be a Delta hub and has had a big dropoff in business since Delta shifted its attention elsewhere, has some good news: Allegiant, one of the ultra-low-cost carriers people seem to hate but love to fly, will make Cincinnati its 14th base.
The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport (CVG) has been a high-fare destination since Delta stopped dropping fares to meet low-cost competitors such as Frontier. With two low-cost operators focusing on it, CVG’s potential customers can hope to stop driving to Dayton, Columbus and other airports in search of lower fares. In fact, it’s working already; in yesterday’s new, TravelGumbo reported that CVG has become one of the lowest-fare airports by average cost of flight.
Alllegiant has been flying 35 non-stops a week to 11 U.S. cities from CVG, and is planning to add more, including more flights to Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale and the Tampa Bay area. Because of the large number of flights, the airline now plans to base at least 3 of its A319s at CVG, which will create about 90 jobs for the area.
