Reinhold Messner, the first man to climb Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen, is, as you’d expect, a man who thinks a lot about mountains and climbing them. And he’s also a man who wants the rest of us to know about and understand mountaineering.
The sixth, and last, in a series of museums he’s built on the subject is about to open on top of Mount Kronplatz in Austria’s South Tyrol. This one, 2275 meters above sea level, focuses on “rock,” as well as offering spectacular views for miles around. Other museums in the group focus on such topics as history of mountain communities, ice, mountaineering themed art, etc.
The new museum at Coronnes is designed to blend into its surroundings in UNESCO World Heritage landscape; only the entrance is visible.
