Vienna, a frequent winner of livability awards and home to a more extensive collection of public toilets than anywhere else, is starting a multi-year multi-million upgrade that will reduce the number of facilities but give users a decidedly modern and sometimes posh experience.
When the program is complete, will be 150 public toilet facilities in the city, compared with 270 now. They will vary in size and equipment, depending on where they are and the traffic they expect. One of the big changes is that they will all be accessible for disabled people. Some will be self-cleaning, others will be cleaned several times a day. All will cost 50c to use.
It might be pointed out that some cities make facilities available for free, as Paris does, and that reducing the number is not a good idea. However, the head of the agency responsible for the upgrade says “What’s important is that we offer the best experience we can. If I have to choose between a few good toilets or a lot of bad ones, I would opt for the good ones. But the fact remains that we have the most toilet facilities of any megacity in Europe.”
