Anyone who’s been to Austria lately will have noticed souvenir shirts, mugs, everything playing on the slogan “No Kangaroos in Austria.” It’s an answer to a stunningly common confusion of Austria with Australia. But now the slogan seems less accurate, with two kangaroo sightings this year.
The photo at top was taken in a field of corn near St. Oswald bei Haslach by a local man out for a walk; at first he thought it was a dummy—until it moved. He notified a local radio station, but there are no reports of missing kangaroos. Perhaps it’s an Australian tourist?
Austria’s other kangaroo incident, last January, is easier to explain; a pet named Anton escaped from his owners. After four months of living on his own in snowy winter conditions he was recaptured.
