Another Vegas Landmark Hotel to be Torn Down

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority Board voted to demolish the Riveria Hotel and Casino. The Convention Center bought the Riviera for $182.5 million plus $8.5 million in transaction costs in February. They want to expand the Convention Center to the Las Vegas Strip. Their plans are to pave over the land while they raise the estimated 2.3 billion dollars for the expansion. They are anticipating getting the money will take years.  A contractor told the board that the demolition and paving the lot for temporary outdoor exhibit space could cost 42 million .

The Riveria was one of the oldest hotels remaining in Vegas and I’m not surprised that it’s on the chopping block.  I am a little surprised that the convention center is expanding that much.  Many of the hotels in Vegas have their own (smaller) convention centers, in addition to the large center that is near the old Hilton hotel, so there seems to be no shortage of convention space in town.

 

Always I wonder where they’ll get the people to fill these places, but somehow they keep coming….
