Spain facing rail strikes next month

Spain’s rail system, Renfe, is facing strikes next month by two key unions, the train drivers (SEMAF) and maintenance workers (CCOO). In both cases, contract negotiations are involved.

The engineers have called two one-day strikes and a two-day strike; the dates are September 4, 11 and 14-15. They cite a “lack of progress” in negotiations over wages and grievances, and say it “has left us no alternative but to go on strike.”

They may be joined by the maintenance workers, who in addition to wage issues are demanding more staffing. The union says that at least 1125 more workers are needed to fully staff the jobs and address “the serious situation of the lack of maintenance on the company’s trains.” They’ve also scheduled a protest outside the Ministry of Public Works in Madrid on September 12th.
