As the Chinese economy has improved over the past few decades, there has been the emergence of greater international travel among a growing segment of its population. Chinese tourists love traveling as much as anyone, and love their duty free shopping more than most.
It seems the average Chinese traveler spends $3800 US per annum on duty free and destination shopping, totaling $130 billion a year, to me a surprising sum. What kind of goods do they like to buy? Big international brand names like Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci. They like shoes and perfumes and cosmetics.
Duty free shops are responding with Chinese speaking staff to service the full planes of departing tourists. Passengers are advised to leave extra time to check their purchases with the airlines, as usually there is not enough cabin space to accommodate the many full bags of goodies heading back to China. Apps that help arrange shipping for these items are also popping up.
Despite a significant slow down in the Chinese economy, experts expect these spending trends to continue!
